History of Cambodia

In 1975, the Khmer Republic collapsed after 119 days of offensives by the Communist troops. The Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK; also known as the Khmer Rouge) started to reshape the country into a classless society by relocating the entire urban population into the countryside to work as farmers. However, the people who had previously been living in cities did not have the ability to cultivate land. As a result, malnutrition and hunger led to the death of hundreds of thousands of people. In their attempt to restructure the country, the CPK oppressed religion and abandoned industrial infrastructure. Businessmen and intellectuals were executed, and schools, hospitals, and banks were closed. Between 1.4 and 2.2 million.

Nearly 34% of all Cambodians survive on less than a dollar a day. Poor Cambodian families have no choice but to send their children to work as beggars, maids, tin can collectors and far worse, for as little as 25 cents a day. Child labor is common. Many children collect plastic items to make money to help support their family. Many, many children do not go to school as their parents cannot afford it.  Parent cannot afford the school uniform, school material or transport to the school.

The income that the rubbish provides sustains the family on a daily basis. This is the children’s reality until they come to children center where they can become children again, learn, play and be creative and sometimes even attend the Khmer public school, private school.
